EMMIT MCHENRY
Founder of Network Solutions, Inc.
Special Adviser

Emmit McHenry is an entrepreneurial company builder, a powerhouse, advancing concepts that have resulted in innovations which currently serve as the grounding force behind how we all share information globally across the Internet.

  • More

Emmit was born in Forrest City, Arkansas, on July 12, 1943, the grandson of a minister. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was an entrepreneur at an early age, taking on paper routes, lawn mowing jobs and other odd jobs at the local country club.

In 1979, he founded an engineering company that became Network Solutions, Inc. On Dec. 31 1992, The National Science Foundation Department selected Network Solutions as the manager of domain names registration service for the Internet. That contract would make the company and Emmit a legacy. Network Solutions, Inc. had the sole authority to develop and issue the Internet system for Web addresses. Emmit created a complex computer code whereby ordinary people can now surf the web or have e-mails without having to study computer science. This was the birth of the Internet as we know it, with .COM, .NET, .EDU, and .GOV.

  • More

I have always been a person connected to the land. My grandparents were farmers and I spent many summers with them cultivating, harvesting, and appreciating the bounties of the earth. In my travels and extended stay in Scandinavia I was able to experience an entire region’s respect for the land, and how the people were good shepherds for the environment. That respect was not evident when I returned to the States in 1999. I want to be an example for my children and grandchildren. I want them to see that there are people who are actively protecting Mother Nature, and Moses Boone is one of them!

As sales manager with Toyota and Lexus, it is refreshing to know that I work with a company that is pro-active in creating environmentally friendly automobiles. I have served as Sustainability Building Adviser with Gateway College and am actively involved with, and on the board of, several organizations: the Elm City Cyclist, Environmental Justice Network Board member, the Inter Religious Eco Justice Network, Board member of the New Haven Sustainability Council, Beaver Hill Management Team of New Haven.

After receiving my Masters in Public Health, I had a passion to help empower people to become educated and be their own health advocates. Working with Arbonne, an environmentally friendly and health conscious company, exposed me to the vastness of health ignorance that exists. I began to use my degree to research on my own, so I could be as knowledgeable as I could for my clients and consultants. I had a drive for educating people and learning what was causing so many abnormalities, diseases, and syndromes in the world. I quickly realized that we, as people, have been allowing big business to ruin our world, endangering not only the people, but the plants and animals as well. This made me want to find a way to make a change. Change is the only constant. However, change against the mainstream is never easy, and finding BIG ways to make it happen, is difficult. When Jean William, CEO of planet.ECO® explained his vision for the company, I realized that I found not only a way to help empower people to make change, but to create a legacy for my family and the world. A business, which cares about the environment, helps to educate, and empowers people to do something about it.

Growing up in Connecticut, on the shores of Long Island Sound, in the 1970’s and 80’s, and on the heels of the infamous DDT ban, showed me how negligent human behavior can have a negative impact on the environment. I remember hearing my father reminisce about how vibrant Long Island Sound used to be, while telling us that we could not go to the beach because the city said that the water was too polluted. Thankfully, scientists of that era were able to identify that indiscriminate use of pesticides were responsible for dramatic declines in bird populations. Local and state municipalities were forced to control run-off water that could be contaminating Long Island Sound. This was a tipping point in the local consciousness, and mine, as well. Long Island Sound could not be used as a dumping ground/garbage heap and still be viable for future generations. I still live near the shores of Long Island Sound and enjoy sailing its waves at every opportunity.

Because of concerted efforts by multiple groups to raise awareness, and by changes in the day-to-day business of municipalities and corporations alike, I have witnessed, firsthand, the dramatic comeback in both the population and variety of coastal birds. It seems that every year a new species has reestablished itself on Long Island Sound, as the estuary becomes healthier. In the last 5 years, I have witnessed dolphins, seals, and even whales return.

The lessons of my youth have taught me that negligent human behavior can have a negative impact on the environment. Through awareness, intervention, and sound responsible habits, humans can also have a positive impact, as well. What can work on a micro-ecosystem can certainly work on the whole Earth’s eco-system.

I have spent the better part of the last decade working at a technology start up firm. We grew from 5 employees to over a hundred by the time the company was sold to Eastman Kodak Company. The lessons of my parents, my community, and my professional career, have taught me that positive conscientious efforts can bring about positive change.

This summer, while traveling across the US, I saw both the beauty of nature and the destruction that we have created. I saw fields of solar-powered windmills, acres of farms, and miles and miles of open fields, but also, smog and pollution in the cities, and trash and waste scattered along the sides of highways. There are people who do not think twice about littering our planet with trash, but there are people who will do everything in their power to help rid our planet of waste. This led me to think about where I fit in the grand scheme of things. I certainly do not want to see our planet destroyed, so I must do my best to help our planet. Working with planet. ECO, is one way that I can help. All of us must look at the big picture and work together, doing our part to make the earth a better place for future generations.

I have always understood the importance of preserving the planet. The concept of thinking globally and acting locally has been engraved into me by my father, who has national and international credentials in public and environmental health. The need for clean water, fresh food, less illness and a healthy planet were topics often discussed at the kitchen table.

As a recent Computer Science College graduate, the love of learning and problem solving has always been very important to me. In 2010, I was fortunate enough to be chosen as the very first intern to work with planet.ECO. It has been an incredible opportunity to foster my computer science knowledge and address my concern for the environment at the same time. I am honored and excited to be a planet.ECO team member and look forward to seeing the positive change we will make for our planet and its people.

20 years ago, my husband and I became involved in Martial Arts, where we learned that we as humans are truly one with the earth.

I have to admit that when I was younger, I had no idea about how we affect the environment or how foods can affect your health. But really, it was not a subject most teenagers read or talked about. In 1989, I met the man of my dreams! He was studying Landscape Architecture and believed in keeping the environment beautiful. He has made a successful business doing just that. His sister, the first vegetarian I ever met, who believed in eating organic foods, was sensitive to the environment, and has always led a healthy lifestyle, made us aware of ways to make our lives and our children’s lives better by controlling what we can.

Working with Univera, a wellness product company that “brings the best of nature to humankind”, has made me even more aware of how important it is to eat and live a healthy lifestyle.

We strive to learn more every day on how we can make this earth a better place, teach our children and others to do the same. I truly believe if we all do our part, this planet will be here for our future generations.
